What is Natasha's Law and Who Does It Affect?
13th Sep 2021
Natasha’s Law was first introduced in 2019 and comes into effect in England on 1 October 2021. Wales introduced its legislation in March 2020, and Northern Ireland introduced its legislation back in May 2020.
It applies to food products designated as ‘Pre-Packed for Direct Sale’ (PPDS). That is food prepared and packaged at the same facility it’s offered for sale to consumers. (This includes pre-wrapped products kept behind the counter.)
It will potentially affect cafés, delis and sandwich shops as well as caterers, supermarkets and convenience stores with a ‘food-to-go’ offer.
Under this revised legislation, PPDS foods will require a mandatory label clearly showing the name, quantity and the full ingredient list of the food.
It’s Important To Declare Any Of The 14 Allergens:
- Celery
- Gluten
- Crustaceans
- Eggs
- Fish
- Milk
- Lupin
- Molluscs
- Mustard
- Sesame
- Peanuts
- Soybeans
- Sulphur dioxide and sulphites
- Nuts
Any of the above must be clearly emphasised (i.e in bold and underlined).
