The UK's Manufacturing Is Growing...

17th May 2021

Statistically, the UK remains the ninth largest manufacturing nation in the world and the home of the first industrial revolution.

UK manufacturing used to account for over 50% of the British economy, post WWII. This continued to decline to 25% of GDP in 1970, to 12% in 2008, then again in 2020 with a global pandemic...

On the surface things looked bleak for the UK, until data released this year for UK manufacturing activity shown it’s now re-emerging at its fastest rate since 1994. (According to the IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for April 2021).

These statistics show signs of a forthcoming renaissance of a once strong UK manufacturing industry, this time to fuel the thriving e-commerce marketplace.

As a nation with an impressive variety of products, the future of manufacturing looks more promising than it has in three quarters of a century. Not just for the purposes of self-sufficiency, but also trading unique goods all over the world. - Around 45% of UK manufactured goods are intended for export.

But what could be the next step for the future of the manufacturing industry?

Upcoming Trends:

The longevity of the UK’s manufacturing rests on New Product Development for many companies and sustainability and personalisation trends.

According to a study by business magazine Forbes in 2020 - 8 out of 10 of consumers will choose goods based on personalisation and sustainability.

So far, the “new era” of manufacturing aims to fuse harmoniously with recycling. Reducing raw material waste, single-use plastics and carbon emissions, creating a green and efficient ‘circular economy’.
