Getting To Grips: New Tyre Labelling 2021

30th Apr 2021

2021’s updated tyre labelling system aims to inform consumers of performance and efficiency with a simplified rating...

A new tyre labelling system designed to help motorists understand how well tyres perform, especially for fuel efficiency and grip in the wet, is to be introduced on 1 May 2021.

The information is drawn from a European database consists of ratings of every tyre on sale, which will be made accessible to the public.

The change follows concerns that owners aren’t aware of the significant differences between the highest and lowest rated tyres displayed on the discontinued label.

According to a survey of the European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers’ Association - just one per cent of tyres on the market are ‘A’ rated for both efficiency and grip in wet road conditions.

While other factors influence the low number of the best performing tyres being sold, raising awareness of the ratings is a primary concern.

The tyres would leave the stock room and get fitted straight to the vehicle, meaning the customer never actually saw them.

There will be an ‘interim’ period before the old label becomes obsolete, all tyres in stockrooms will have the old label applied to them and until these have been sold, so customers may still see the old label.

What’s Different About The New Tyre Labels?

The number of ratings has now simplified into five, in-line with other consumer products such as domestic appliances:
‘A’ being the best and ‘E’ being the worst.

If the tyre is classified as suitable for use on snow, it will have the Mountain peak symbol.

A symbol for tyres classified as suitable for ice (known as ‘Nordic tyres’) are now also featured.

What’s Staying The Same?

A tyre’s fuel efficiency, braking performance in the wet and the amount of road noise it generates remain the core information of the label and a rating is provided for each performance measure.
